A chamber system is similar to a conventional system, but instead of gravel trenches, it uses open-bottom plastic chambers placed underground. Effluent flows into the chambers and then filters into the soil below and around them.

A pump system uses a pump to move effluent from the septic tank or pump chamber to the drain field. This is common when the drain field is uphill from the tank or when the system needs controlled dosing.
